Early Action Metrics

The government will publish yearly league tables of the top companies’ CRC performance – the first of these will be in autumn 2011. To achieve a higher league table position in Year 1, there are only two confirmed actions an organisation could have taken:

1. Achieve the Carbon Trust Standard (or similar) certification
2. Install Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) on your organisation’s non half hourly meters.

How can we help? Well, the first footprint and annual reports ought now be submitted, and so the focus will need to move to the league table that will be produced in autumn 2012.

The two year 1 early action metrics will still influence your league table position in year 2, though the actual reduction and relative growth of your organisation will also come to the fore. To look at the Early Action Metrics influencers in a bit more detail:

Carbon Trust Standard (or similar)

There are now a number of standards that have been accredited to give higher CRC league table position – they all count equally towards your early action metric. They include:

• Carbon Trust Standard
• CEMARS
• Carbon Saver Gold Standard
• Kitemark
• Carbon Action Standard Plus

In order to get your organisation (or part of your organisation) assessed to one of the above standard there are 3 generic assessment criteria that need to be met. You will need to show you can:

1. Provide accurate measurement of your carbon footprint over the previous 3 years
2. Achieve either an absolute or a relative reduction in your footprint year on year
3. Demonstrate good carbon management

This includes visiting your site and collecting data. If we can prove that your organisation meets the criteria, then our engineer will work with you to create your evidence pack and then pass your application on for assessment.

For the demonstration of good carbon management: if certain documents are not currently prepared we can assist in the creation of these. Examples may include:- a low-carbon policy; documented carbon accounting processes; procedures for monitoring energy usage; documented carbon reduction plans; energy training procedures etc.

Automatic Meter Reading

We can complete a feasibility study for you to:

1. Identify all meters
2. Classify all meters (HHM, Gas, Smart Meter – what type; non HHM – what type)
3. Identify existing electronic data gathering systems
4. Establish current % of energy under AMR as per CRC rules
5. Suggest strategies to move towards 100% AMR therefore giving as high a % as is practically possible of the Early Action Metric
6. Complete a financial analysis to establish which meters are optimal for the installation of AMR
